Overview

Join us for an incredible experience to see the eruption of the volcano at night!

The nighttime tour of the south route is from 3PM-11PM with dinner included. First, we stop for fresh local treats from Punalu'u Bake Shop, before dipping our toes in the sand at the incredible Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, home to many nesting Hawaiian Sea Turtles. Then, as nighttime descends, we head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to explore the main feature of our tour. When Kilauea is erupting, a special stop is made for viewing the spectacular glow of the lava lake at night.

What To Expect

Kailua-Kona
Depart from Kailua-Kona and drive down the south Kona Coast to Naalehu and the first stop, Punalu'u Bake Shop. View ancient lava fields, Kealakekua Bay, macadamia nut orchards and more on this scenic drive toward the Ka'u district of the Big Island.

Punalu'u Bake Shop
Introduced to Hawai‘i by Portuguese sugar workers during the 19th century, sweet bread has become a time-honored favorite among residents and visitors alike. The delicately sweet and moist Hawaiian sweet bread at Punalu‘u Bake Shop originated from a traditional family recipe. When the recipe was adapted and prepared at a resort restaurant in Punalu‘u (Ka‘u District on the Big Island of Hawaii) in the 1970s, the sweet bread was an instant hit. To keep visitors and kama'aina supplied with this popular favorite, the Punalu‘u Bake Shop was opened in 1991.

Punalu'u Black Sand beach
From Punalu'u Bake Shop, drive 15 minutes to one of the Big Island's most beautiful black sand beaches, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Ka'u, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach. Although it may be tempting, do not touch these protected turtles and do not remove any black sand from the beach. This is NOT a swimming beach.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
After the black sand beach, we travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the crown jewel of the tour and the Big Island in general. Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,681 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a deli-style dinner in the National Park. If the volcano is erupting, we will showcase a viewing on this evening tour.

Saddle Road
After the National Park, we head for Hilo, Hawaii's second biggest city, and join the Saddle Road on our way back to Kailua-Kona. Slicing across the Big Island from east to west, through a high valley or “saddle” between the mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, Saddle Road (also known as Hawaii Route 200) is 54 miles (87 km) of pure adventure. Along the way, you'll pass dried lava flows, rolling pastureland, desert- and moonlike fields, lush rainforests and trailheads that lead to several hiking trails. Also along the route are roads leading to the mountaintops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, as well as the largest military training reserve in Hawaii. The highest point on the road is at 6,632 feet (2,021 m). People have described this area as resembling a moonlike landscape, with long stretches of bare lava and very little vegetation. Keep an eye out in the night sky, as the stargazing at the peak of Saddle Road is spectacular.
