Red Sand Beach - Kaihalulu Beach
Red Sand Beach is a dramatic and beautiful hidden cove unlike any other. The ocean outside the cove is almost always a deep, almost surreal Kool-Aid blue, and rages relentlessly against the dramatic and rugged coastline.

The crescent-shaped beach is cut deep into the Ka’uiki Head cinder cone, whose rust-red lava cinder cliffs supply the beach with its red sand. These cliffs of loose crumbly cinders tower almost vertically, yet somehow remain intact to impressive heights.

The cove is protected on the ocean side by a wall of jagged black lava rock, further contributing to this almost otherworldly scene.

WARNING:
Part of the trail was lost to a landslide and has become more dangerous than it once was. This is not a safe hike for anyone unaccustomed to navigating cliff-edges with slippery/unsound footing.

In a nutshell: A dramatic and beautiful hidden cove unlike any other.
Minuses: The short hike to the beach is hazardous.
Sound-bite: “Has the Mothership departed without me?”

Bamboo Forest
Hike into a beautiful, pristine Bamboo Forest to swim in a pool at the base of natural waterfall.

There are few, if any companies on Maui that provide a tour of this unique location.

All guests should be in good physical shape and be able to hike at least one mile on both flat and inclined surfaces.

There are streams to cross and rocks to hop.

You will have to be agile enough to do some minor rock hopping, dunk and climb over fallen trees that may be in the path.

We typically spend about an hour at this location. But we also make the tour up as we go along according to the group, weather and trail conditions.

You may get muddy and wet traversing the trail.

There may be mosquitos so please bring your own bug spray if you think you may need it.

This hike is not difficult, but it is not a simple stroll through the woods on a path that was manmade.

This truly is an adventure!

Alelele Falls
A short hike from the roadway gets you a 80 foot tall natural waterfall with refreshing pool at the bottom. Most people drive right by Alelele as they speed off to one of the more popular nearby destinations, such as the pools at Oheo, making this waterfall peaceful and quiet.

Ke‘anae Point
This is one of the most scenic places on the entire Road to Hana. It is also where our tour ends and we begin our drive back to where we started our tour in Paia.

The Ke’anae Peninsula is a dramatic half-mile long massive finger of newer lava sticking out from the cliff line of the Hana Highway.

Historically, Ke’anae has been a taro producing Hawaiian village, and much of the land is in taro lo’i today. It is told that the dirt was brought down here basket-by-basket. This story may very well be true since the area is young lava rock, created quite recently (geologically speaking) in a massive flow from Haleakala.

On April 1, 1946 the area was almost completely destroyed by a tsunami generated by an 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska. This village has deep Hawaiian Roots.

There are public restrooms at this location.

Charles Lindbergh's Grave
For those that wish to visit this scenic site.

Lindbergh’s grave is a simple granite slab laid upon lava stones, located in the yard behind the Palapala Congregational Church. Built in 1857, the historic church sits on a cliff overlooking the dramatic coastline. It’s also the first building to greet the morning sunrise on Maui. The church grounds provide a serene setting for meditation and reflection, and Charles Lindbergh loved this peaceful part of the island.

Ho'okipa Beach Park
Ho’okipa Beach is a world-renowned windsurfing destination with often dramatic and impressive surf for sightseers as well.

Here you will be able to view and pictures of Hawaiian Sea Turtles basking in the sun, and sometimes a resident Monk Seal.

There is optional swimming at this location, showers and public restrooms.

Ho’okipa is Mecca to the windsurfing world (and no slouch for board surfing, either.) There are professional windsurfing competitions held here, and on just about any day with wind (most) you can watch pros doing their thing. Ho’okipa also provides sightseers a stunning backdrop to watch the best effortlessly play with the ocean in a way that mere mortals can only dream of.
